Animation of 1st Class Starboard Window, RMS Lusitania

Conservation of a number of artefacts recovered from the RMS Lusitania in 2011 has been completed in our facility in Tralee. An innovative component of the conservation works record, designed by archaeological illustrator Fiachra Dunne, is the animation of the working of and components of the window from the 1st Class cabins. The window is in a fine state of preservation, albeit, without its glass. Forensic archaeological recording of the window has enabled for the first time a 3D animation of the mechanism for the opening and closing of this wonderful artefact. The sub-rectangular window features an attractive open fretwork vent grill on the exterior. On the interior a rectangular vent box is located that is opened and closed by a round knob connected to a solid brass rod and cog system. Click on the animation above.
